Inter – and Transdisciplinarity in Architecture

The Architecture & Design Unit of the Athens Institute is organizing a Microsymposium on “Inter- and Transdisciplinarity in Architecture” as part of the 17^th Annual International Conference on Architecture, 5-10 July 2027, Athens, Greece.

Contemporary architectural research increasingly engages with interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary frameworks in response to the growing complexity of cultural, social, technological, and environmental challenges. Interdisciplinarity is generally understood as the integration and transfer of methods, concepts, and analytical tools across disciplines, enabling comparative approaches and the development of shared bodies of knowledge. Transdisciplinarity extends this

logic by actively transcending disciplinary boundaries, proposing a holistic approach to knowledge that operates across and beyond established epistemological divisions.

The symposium aims to bring together academics and researchers in the field of Architecture’s Inter- and Transdisciplinarity (AITD) to reflect on AITD as both a creative and research means. The intent is to study both theoretical and practical perspectives, exploring, on the one hand, existing theoretical and/or materialized works and, on the other hand, proposing new perspectives and concrete creative works.

Within the aim of AITD, proposals may focus on specific inter- and/or transdisciplinary relationships, specific concepts, works, authors, periods, and places. Examples may be, but are not limited to, reflections on which discipline(s) architecture establishes interdisciplinary and/or transdisciplinary relationships with? Who is the author or authors that propose these? What reasons and ideas motivated the authors to establish these relationships? How are these relationships established and manifest themselves? What historical/intellectual periods are most paradigmatic for each type of relationship? In which geographical and cultural context? How may these experiences be a creative resource? How can one use AITD as a creative means?

In the end, these reflections will help move beyond disciplinary compartmentalization, fostering convergence among art, science, and the humanities.
