The Sports Unit of the Athens Institute is organizing a Microsymposium on “How Intellectual Property Shapes Sports Innovation” as part of the 26th Annual International Conference on Sports: Economic, Management, Marketing & Social Aspects, 11-15 May 2026, Athens, Greece, sponsored by the Athens Journal of Sports.
This interdisciplinary event explores the role of intellectual property (IP) in driving innovation, creativity, and business in the sports world. We invite submissions that examine the impact of IP across sports technology, equipment, branding, digital media, athlete rights, and fan engagement.
Topics of Interest Include (but are not limited to):
- IP and innovation in sports technology, wearables, and equipment
- Branding, licensing, and merchandising in sports
- Digital IP in esports, apps, and sports media
- Athlete image rights and personal branding
- Patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets in sports
- Emerging trends: NFTs, AI, and the metaverse in sports
- Case studies of IP-driven success in sports organizations or startups
You may participate as a presenter of one paper and/or an attendee.
Please submit an abstract (email only) to: atiner@atiner.gr, using the abstract submission form by 28 February 2026 to: Dr. Gregory T. Papanikos, President, Athens Institute. Abstracts should include the following: Title of Paper, Full Name (s), Affiliation, Current Position, an email address, and at least 3 keywords that best describe the subject of your submission. Decisions are reached within 4 weeks.
