The Athens Institute is organizing a Symposium on “Energy Security in the Mediterranean Basin: Global Challenges” as part of the 19th Annual International Conference on Mediterranean Studies, 30-31 March & 1-2 April 2026, Athens, Greece, sponsored by the Athens Journal of Mediterranean Studies.
The Mediterranean region stands at the crossroads of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East—making it a strategic hub for global energy flows, trade, and geopolitical interactions. As the world transitions toward cleaner and more sustainable energy systems, the Mediterranean faces unique challenges and opportunities in ensuring energy security, resilience, and cooperation.

This session invites papers that explore the economic, political, technological, and environmental dimensions of energy security in the Mediterranean basin. Contributions may address, but are not limited to, the following themes:
- Regional and international energy policies and governance
- Renewable energy development and integration
- Energy transition and climate commitments
- Maritime routes, infrastructure, and critical supply chains
- Geopolitical tensions and cooperation frameworks
- Technological innovations and energy resilience
- Energy justice and socio-economic implications
You may participate as a presenter of one paper and/or an attendee.
Please submit an abstract (email only) to: atiner@atiner.gr, using the abstract submission form by 2 December 2025 to Dr. Hemmat Safwat, Deputy Director, Engineering Division, Athens Institute. Abstracts should include the following: Title of Paper, Full Name (s), Affiliation, Current Position, an email address, and at least 3 keywords that best describe the subject of your submission. Decisions are reached within 4 weeks.
