Athens Institute Undergraduate Mathematics Competition (AIUMC)
Fostering Excellence in Undergraduate Students Mathematics Research

28 & 29 June 2027

About the Initiative

The Athens Institute Undergraduate Mathematics Competition (AIUMC) is an international competition designed to promote high-quality mathematical research among undergraduate students worldwide, while further strengthening the Institute’s position as a leading platform for academic exchange in pure, applied, and computational mathematics.

Objectives

  • Cultivate rigorous and original mathematical research among undergraduate students across all fields of pure, applied, and computational mathematics.
  • Connect talented undergraduates with a global network of mathematicians, academic mentors, and leading research institutions.
  • Foster meaningful academic exchange through peer competition, expert review, and scholarly dialogue in an international conference setting.
  • Provide an early-career platform for undergraduates to present their work, receive expert feedback, and explore postgraduate study and research pathways in mathematics.

Timeline

30 September 2026 - 31 December 2026

-Submission of abstracts/proposals (application form)

-Decisions will be reached in less than four weeks. All submissions will be evaluated and will receive comments from at least three reviewers.

Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Theodore Trafalis

Position
Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Director of the Optimization & Intelligent Systems Laboratory, The University of Oklahoma, USA

Research Profile
Dr. Theodore B. Trafalis is a professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering and the Director of the Optimization & Intelligent Systems Laboratory at the University of Oklahoma. He is a globally recognized expert in mathematical optimization, machine learning, and data analytics. His pioneering work bridges pure mathematical theory with complex engineering and environmental applications.

Academic Background & Mathematical Foundation
Dr. Trafalis's research is deeply rooted in a strong foundation of theoretical and applied mathematics. He began his academic journey in Greece, earning a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Athens in 1982 with honours. He was also listed in the dean’s list of the School of Physics and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Athens.

He pursued graduate studies at Purdue University, focusing on mathematical frameworks for computational efficiency and system behavior. He earned an M.S. in Mathematics (1984), an M.S. in Industrial Engineering (1987), and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering / Operations Research (1989).

Research and Expertise
• Mathematical Optimization: convex-concave optimization, saddle point problems, robust optimization, and Pareto frontier analysis in large-scale systems.
• Machine Learning Foundations: Support Vector Machines (SVM), kernel-based learning algorithms, and data-driven decision systems.
• Complex Networks: infrastructure systems, multiplex networks, and supply chain resilience modelling.

Professional Impact and Recognition
Dr. Trafalis has been continuously funded by major scientific organizations including the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NOAA. His mathematical models have been applied to manufacturing optimization, financial modelling, and weather and tornado forecasting.

He has held international visiting research positions in France, Japan, the Netherlands, Greece, and Russia. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles, authored and edited textbooks (including Robust Data Mining), and serves on multiple editorial boards in optimization and intelligent systems journals. He is a recipient of the NSF Young Investigator Award.

Review Process

🔍
Abstract Evaluation

All abstract submissions are evaluated and scored anonymously. Authors of accepted abstracts are invited to submit the full paper along with their registration form.

👥
Paper Evaluation

Each paper is assessed and scored by at least three specialists in the relevant field or track. Authors receive reviewers’ comments to help them prepare the final version of their written paper as well as their oral presentation for the conference.

🏆
Final Ranking

The final ranking is determined by the Steering and Academic Committee based on both the final paper evaluation and the conference oral presentation. Awards are presented during the official dinner ceremony. All presenters receive an official certificate of participation in the oral presentation process.
