as part of the 26th Annual International Conference on Sports: Economic, Management, Marketing & Social Aspects

The Sports Unit of the Athens Institute on the occasion of the 2026 World Football Cup hosted by Canada, USA, and Mexico, is organizing a Microsymposium on “Global Perspectives on the World Football Cup: Sport, Culture, and Innovation” as part of the 26th Annual International Conference on Sports: Economic, Management, Marketing & Social Aspects, 11-15 May 2026, Athens, Greece, sponsored by the Athens Journal of Sports


We welcome acdemics and researchers from around the world to participate in an interdisciplinary exploration of football’s global impact. The microsymposium aims to bring together diverse perspectives on the cultural, economic, technological, and social dimensions of the World Cup.

Themes and Topics:
We welcome submissions related to, but not limited to:

  • History and evolution of the FIFA World Cup
  • Sports diplomacy and international relations
  • Technological innovation and performance analytics in football
  • Economic, social, and cultural impacts of hosting the World Cup
  • Sustainability and environmental considerations in mega-sporting events
  • Fan culture, media, and the global football community

You may participate as a presenter of one paper and/or an attendee.

Please submit an abstract (email only) to: atiner@atiner.gr, using the abstract submission form by 20 January 2026 to: Dr. Gregory T. Papanikos, President, Athens Institute. Abstracts should include the following: Title of Paper, Full Name (s), Affiliation, Current Position, an email address, and at least 3 keywords that best describe the subject of your submission. Decisions are reached within 4 weeks.
