as part of the 12th Annual International Conference on Sociology
7-10 May 2018, Athens, Greece
sponsored by the Athens Journal of Social Sciences
The Sociology Unit and the Languages & Linguistics Unit of ATINER organize A Stream on “Languages in Societies: Critical Perspectives”, 7-10 May 2018, Athens, Greece as part of the 12th Annual International Conference on Sociology sponsored by the Athens Journal of Social Sciences.
This stream will examine languages in societies from critical perspectives. From different fields such as sociolinguistics, sociology in education, bilingual education, multilingualism, language policy, and so on, presenters will focus their attention to how languages are used or learned, who decide how and what languages are prioritized and what are the consequences of a particular usage of a language or languages for its population. All studies are welcomed from ESL adults to youth and children learning languages in school settings. In addition, other topics could be : the value of languages in global settings, indigenous revitalization and ideologies surrounding a particular languages or varieties of languages. The main focus would be to adhere to a critical lens while looking at actual data related to the topic.
Special arrangements will be made with a local hotel for a limited number of rooms at a special conference rate. In addition, a number of special events will be organized: A pragmatic symposium (as organized in Ancient Athens but fine tuned to synchronous ethics), a special one-day educational island tour, a Mycanae and island of Poros visit, an Athens educational walking tour, an one-day visit to Delphi and an ancient Corinth and Cape Sounion visit.
