The Sociology Research Unit and the Languages & Linguistics Research Unit of the Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER) organize A Panel on “Languages in Societies: Critical Perspectives”, 7-10 May 2018, Athens, Greece as part of the 12th Annual International Conference on Sociology sponsored by the Athens Journal of Social Sciences.

This panel will examine languages in societies from critical perspectives. From different fields such as sociolinguistics, sociology in education, bilingual education, multilingualism, language policy, and so on, presenters will focus their attention to how languages are used or learned, who decide how and what languages are prioritized and what are the consequences of a particular usage of a language or languages for its population.  All studies are welcomed from ESL adults to youth and children learning languages in school settings. In addition, other topics could be : the value of languages in global settings, indigenous revitalization and ideologies surrounding a particular languages or varieties of languages. The main focus would be to adhere to a critical lens while looking at actual data related to the topic.

Special arrangements will be made with a local hotel for a limited number of rooms at a special conference rate. In addition, a number of social events will be organized: A Greek night of entertainment with dinner, a special one-day cruise to selected Greek islands, an archaeological tour of Athens and a one-day visit to Delphi. The Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER)was established in 1995 as an independent world association of Academics and Researchers. Its mission is to act as a forum where Academics and Researchers from all over the world can meet in Athens, in order to exchange ideas on their research, and to discuss future developments in their disciplines.

The organizing and hosting of International Conferences and Symposiums, the carrying out of Research, and the production of Publications are the basic activities of ATINER.  Since 1995, ATINER has organized more than 400 International Conferences and other events, and has published close to 200 books. In 2012, the Association launched a series of conference paper publications (click here), and at the beginning of 2014, it introduced its own series of Journals (click here).

Academically, the Association is organized into seven Research Divisions and 38 Research Units.  Each Research Unit organizes at least an Annual International Conference, and may also undertake various small and large research projects.
