A Panel on Social Media
as part of the 15th Annual International Conference on Communication and Mass Media
8-11 May 2017, Athens, Greece
sponsored by the Athens Journal of Mass Media and Communications
The Mass Media & Communication Unit of ATINER organizes A Panel on Social Media, 8-11 May 2017, Athens, Greece as part of the 15th Annual International Conference on Communication and Mass Media sponsored by the Athens Journal of Mass Media and Communications.
The tentacles of social media are increasingly intruding upon all areas of life and communication. This panel seeks to present current scholarship that illustrates the way this technology is:
- Altering the structure of business, culture and government
- Facilitating the spread of ideas (for the benefit or detriment of humankind)
- Modifying traditional understandings of freedom of expression
- Increasing or decreasing justice in society
- Challenging or reshaping well-established theories of communication or having having counterintuitive outcomes–such as making information harder to get rather than easier; more repression of thought rather than less; increased self-censorship for fear of reprisal. (These are examples, there is no limit to subjects that may fit this area)
Special arrangements will be made with a local hotel for a limited number of rooms at a special conference rate. In addition, a number of social events will be organized: A Greek night of entertainment with dinner, a special one-day cruise to selected Greek islands, an archaeological tour of Athens and a one-day visit to Delphi. Details of the social program are available here.
Fee structure information is available on https://www.atiner.gr/fees.

The association was established in 1995 as an independent world association of Academics and Researchers. Its mission is to act as a forum where Academics and Researchers from all over the world can meet in Athens, in order to exchange ideas on their research, and to discuss future developments in their disciplines.
The organizing and hosting of International Conferences and Symposiums, the carrying out of Research, and the production of Publications are the basic activities of ATINER.
