A Stream on “Citizenship & Journalism in the Era of Fake News”
as part of the 17th Annual International Conference on Communication and Mass Media
13-16 May 2019, Athens, Greece
sponsored by the Athens Journal of Mass Media and Communications

The Mass Media & Communication Unit of ATINER is organizing a Stream on “Citizenship & Journalism in the Era of Fake News”, 13-16 May 2019, Athens, Greece as part of the 17th Annual International Conference on Communication and Mass Media sponsored by the Athens Journal of Mass Media and Communications.

Fake news is not a new phenomenon.  But, the era of web-generated fake news has shattered journalistic norms and it has become a potent force in the information that citizens encounter about public issues.  The public and journalists, alike, struggle to adjust to a world in which many citizens do not rely on professionally reported news sources, rather on information sources that reinforce viewpoints—a polarized world in which there is no agreement on basic facts.  It is a world in which the media are labeled as an enemy of the people.   This stream seeks to present a discussion of the implications of these phenomena by considering issues such as (but not limited to):

  • The future of fake news: Is it the new normal?
  • The future of media as its role in society is challenged
  • Journalism’s response to fake news
  • Citizens’ response to fake news
  • Fake news and democratic government
  • Role of the Internet in fake news
  • Social media and fake news
