A Special Session on “International Family Law and International Parental Child Abduction”
as part of the 21st Annual International Conference on Law, 15-18 July 2024, Athens Greece

15-18 July 2024, Athens, Greece

ATINER is organizing a Special Session on “International Family Law and International Parental Child Abduction” as part of the 21st Annual International Conference on Law, 15-18 July 2024, Athens Greece, sponsored by the Athens Journal of Law.

International parental child abduction, parental kidnapping, and cross-border custodial disputes present complex legal challenges that transect criminal, civil, and family law. Multilateral recognition of its civil dimensions resulted in the 1980 Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, a treaty that Contracting States utilize to resolve abductions through civil procedures intended to ensure children’s prompt return to their country of habitual residence and to protect parents’ rights of access. Despite a robust 103 Contracting State Parties to the Convention, its implementation is uneven, and certain states remain unlikely to accede to this treaty. This session invites academic research on international family law, Hague Convention implementation and alternative international agreements to resolve child abduction among non-contracting states. Of particular interest is research on the influence of religion, custom, culture, and ideology on states’ legal processes to address the problem.
Keywords: Hague Convention, parental, child abduction, family law, international law, cross-border custody disputes
