The Athens Institute is organizing a Symposium on “Education in the Mediterranean – Challenges, Innovations, and Future Directions” as part of the 19th Annual International Conference on Mediterranean Studies, 30-31 March & 1-2 April 2026, Athens, Greece, sponsored by the Athens Journal of Mediterranean Studies.
This microsymposium aims to explore the diverse educational landscapes, identify ongoing challenges, highlight innovative practices, and discuss future directions in educational policy, practice, and research.
Scope and Themes

The Mediterranean region encompasses a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and socio-economic contexts, which shape its educational systems in unique ways. We invite papers addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
- Challenges in Mediterranean Education:
Inequalities, access to quality education, language diversity, migration, and socio-economic barriers. - Innovative Practices and Pedagogies:
Curriculum reform, digital education, inclusive learning strategies, teacher training, and community-based initiatives. - Policy and Governance:
Educational policy reforms, regional collaborations, international programs, and governance challenges. - Future Directions:
Sustainable educational development, cross-cultural collaboration, technology integration, and research agendas for Mediterranean education.
You may participate as a presenter of one paper and/or an attendee.
