Visit Aristotle’s Lyceum
Monday 9 June 2025
The Arts & Culture Unit & the Tourism, Leisure & Recreation Unit of the Athens Institute organized a “Walking Tour of Philosophical Athens” on Monday, 9 June 2025. Led by Eliza Gardiner (Deputy Head, Arts & Culture Unit, Athens Institute & Professor, Vancouver Island University, Canada) and Peter Walther Baur (Deputy Head, Arts & Culture Unit, Athens Institute & Associate Professor, University of Johannesburg, South Africa), the conference participants visited Aristotle’s Lyceum, where participants engaged in a philosophical discussion on the very site where Aristotle himself once taught. Following this engaging session, the group walked to several historic landmarks, including the Panathenaic
Stadium (or Kallimarmaro)-the site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. They then continued through the National Garden, pausing at the statues of the three great Greek tragedians – Sophocles, Aeschylus, and Euripides – located just outside the garden. The walk concluded in front of the Hellenic Parliament building at Syntagma Square.
This event offered participants a unique opportunity to connect physically and intellectually with the philosophical heritage of Athens.
