A Symposium on Canadian Education at a Crossroads: Responding to Global Trends

The Athens Institute hosted a symposium titled Canadian Education at a Crossroads: Responding to Global Trends on Monday, 19 May 2025, from 15:00 to 16:30 at 9 Chalkokondili Street, Athens (5th Floor).
Moderated by Gregory T. Papanikos, President of the Athens Institute, the event brought together leading Canadian scholars to discuss significant developments and challenges in Canadian education amidst evolving global trends. Professor Svetlana Mikhaylichenko from the University of Toronto Scarborough explored approaches to teaching natural sciences at Canadian universities, while Professor Catherine Lanaris of the University of Quebec in Outaouais addressed the challenges of developing inclusive
practices in French-Canadian elementary schools and teacher training. Associate Professor Tom Wanyama from McMaster University presented on reimagining Canadian engineering education through innovative learning factories. Additionally, Associate Professor Ron Phillips of Nipissing University discussed the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in Canadian education, emphasizing that these values are essential and should not be disregarded.
The symposium provided a valuable platform for educators, researchers, and policymakers to engage with current issues shaping Canadian education and to consider how it can adapt effectively to global demands while fostering inclusivity and innovation.
