A Round-Table Discussion on The Future of Science and Technology
On Monday, 21 July 2025, the Athens Institute successfully hosted a round-table discussion on “The Future of Science and Technology” at its downtown venue in Athens. Moderated by Dr. Gregory T. Papanikos, President of the Athens Institute, the event brought together distinguished academics from around the world to discuss the evolving role of science and technology in shaping the future. The session featured presentations from Dr. Bala Maheswaran (Northeastern University, USA), who spoke on Empowering Global Citizens Through Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future; Dr. Assimina (Mina) A. Pelegri (Rutgers University, USA), who explored the role of AI in Engineering Education and Research; Dr. Vladimir V. Riabov (Rivier University, USA), who addressed Disastrous Challenges to Humanity; Dr. Katsutoshi Kawashima (Osaka Sangyo University, Japan), who presented on Japanese Students’ Reading Skills and STEAM Education; and Dr. Nirusha Thavarajah (University of Toronto, Canada), who discussed the intersection of chemistry and data science in her talk When Molecules Meet Machine Learning. The discussion was further enriched by a brief intervention from Mr. Rachid Kherrazi (WailSalutem Foundation, The Netherlands), offering an additional perspective to the dialogue. The round-table underscored the critical importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and global engagement in addressing contemporary challenges and opportunities in science and technology. -
A Round-Table Discussion on The Future of US and World Universities - Monday 7 July 2025
On Monday, 7 July 2025, the Athens Institute successfully hosted a round-table discussion on“The Future of US and World Universities“ at its downtown venue in Athens. Moderated by Dr. Gregory T. Papanikos, President of the Athens Institute, the event brought together prominent academics from around the world. Featured speakers included Dr. Leah Hollis (The Pennsylvania State University, USA), Dr. Monika Thadhani (University of Wisconsin–Madison, USA), Dr. John Liontas (University of South Florida, USA), Dr. Burcu Ates (Sam Houston State University, USA), and Dr. Clara Germana Gonçalves (University of Lisbon, Portugal), who addressed pressing issues in global higher education—from political pressures and academic freedom to the integration of AI in teacher education. Brief interventions further enriched the discussion, with contributions from Dr. Ke Yu (University of Johannesburg South Africa); Dr. Hemmat Safwat (Director of Energy Development Services Consultancy, Greece); Dr. Marija Liudvika Drazdauskiene (Professor at Wszechnica Polska Academy of Applied Sciences in Warsaw, Poland); Mr. Junpeng Fan (Keio University, Japan); and Ms. Eman H.E. Touliabah (PhD Candidate at Hokkaido University, Japan). The roundtable highlighted the urgent need for innovation, inclusivity, and resilience in the evolving landscape of global academia. -

On Monday May 26, 2025, from 16:30 to 17:30, the Athens Institute’s Downtown Office at 9 Chalkokondili Street hosted a public talk titled Telling Stories About the Economy and Climate Crisis, presented by Jennifer Ellen Good, Chair and Associate Professor in Communication, Popular Culture and Film at Brock University, Canada. The event explored the role of narrative in shaping our understanding of complex global issues such as economic systems and the climate emergency. The event was sponsored by the Canadian University Alumni in Greece. -
A Symposium on Canadian Education at a Crossroads: Responding to Global Trends | Monday, 19 May 2025
The Athens Institute recently hosted a symposium titled Canadian Education at a Crossroads: Responding to Global Trends on Monday, 19 May 2025, from 15:00 to 16:30 at 9 Chalkokondili Street, Athens (5th Floor). Moderated by Gregory T. Papanikos, President of the Athens Institute, the event brought together leading Canadian scholars to discuss significant developments and challenges in Canadian education amidst evolving global trends. Professor Svetlana Mikhaylichenko from the University of Toronto Scarborough explored approaches to teaching natural sciences at Canadian universities, while Professor Catherine Lanaris of the University of Quebec in Outaouais addressed the challenges of developing inclusive practices in French-Canadian elementary schools and teacher training. Associate Professor Tom Wanyama from McMaster University presented on reimagining Canadian engineering education through innovative learning factories. Additionally, Associate Professor Ron Phillips of Nipissing University discussed the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in Canadian education, emphasizing that these values are essential and should not be disregarded. The symposium provided a valuable platform for educators, researchers, and policymakers to engage with current issues shaping Canadian education and to consider how it can adapt effectively to global demands while fostering inclusivity and innovation. -

Dimitrios Goulias, Associate Professor at the University of Maryland, USA, addressed ‘Integrating Sustainability and Resilience in Engineering & Sciences through Experiential Learning‘. George Zahariadis, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, explored ‘Why Are Educational Institutions Suing Social Media Providers?’. Lastly, Evangelos Kaisar, Professor at Florida Atlantic University, USA, highlighted ‘Integrating Research and Teaching in the Classroom: Benefits for Instructors and Students‘. Dr. Sonia Salari, Professor at the University of Utah, USA, explored the “Demographics of Age, Aging, and Politics in the U.S.” Dr. Valery Buinwi Ferim, Senior Lecturer at the University of Fort Hare, South Africa, examined the “Demographics of Political Party Leadership in South Africa.” Dr. Sriparna Dutta, Associate Professor at Khudiram Bose Central College, University of Calcutta, India, provided insights on “Political Demography and Youth – Perspectives on West Bengal, India.” Dr. Martina Rašticová, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Management at Mendel University in Brno, Czech Republic, addressed “Digitalization and Demographic Shifts: Political Strategies for Integrating Older Workers.” Finally, Dr. Ahmed Shafiqul Huque, Professor, McMaster University, Canada and Dr. Jose Antonio Ortega, Associate Professor, University of Salamanca, Spain made brief interventions after the six presentations concluded. -
