A Round-Table Discussion on “The Future of Legal Education, Research, and Practice”
Monday 15 July 2024, at The Athens Institute’s Downtown Office

We are pleased to announce the successful completion of the Round-Table Discussion on “The Future of Legal Education, Research, and Practice” organized by The Athens Institute. The event took place on Monday, 15 July 2024 at the Athens Institute’s Downtown Office, located at 9 Chalkokondili Street, Athens. The program is available at: www.atiner.gr/events/15July2024.pdf

The discussion began with a welcome by Dr. Gregory T. Papanikos, President of the Athens Institute, who also served as the moderator for the event. Following his introduction, the discussion featured a lineup of invited speakers and interventions from distinguished academics across

the globe. Marc Welgemoed, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Criminal and Procedural Law, Faculty of Law, Nelson Mandela University, South Africa, discussed “The Impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution on Legal Education and Legal Practice – the HIVELAW project at the Nelson Mandela University Law Clinic.” Antonio Jesus Alonso Timon, Director of the Law Innovation Center at Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Spain, presented on “New Technologies and Old Methods: Current Ways of Approaching the Teaching of Law in Classrooms.” Rendich Francisca, Professor at Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, explored “The Anachronism of Time: The Importance of Rereading the Classics in Law Schools.” Claudio Sarra, Associate Professor at the University of Padova, Italy, examined “The Future of Legal Education between Humanities and Technology.” Elias Costa Grivoyannis, Associate Professor at Yeshiva University, USA, addressed the question, “Do our Legal Institutions Always Deliver Justice? A Problem of Efficiency.” Mehmet Ertan Yardim, Associate Professor at Kadir Has University, Turkey, discussed “Examination Methods in Large Classes at Law Faculties.” Gaetan Balan, Associate Professor at Lyon Catholic University, France, will share insights on “Serious Games and Teaching of Law: Experiences and Practices.” Finally, Georgios Zouridakis, Research Fellow at The Athens Institute and Member of the Athens Bar Association, Greece, offered “Some Thoughts on Legal Practice and the Justice System.”

We were also honored to have several notable interventions from experts in the field. David A. Frenkel, LL.D., Head of the Law Unit at Athens Institute and Emeritus Professor at the Guilford Glazer Faculty of Business and Management, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel; Karine Millaire, Assistant Professor at the University of Montreal, Canada; Rajko Pirnat, Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia; Nomthandazo Ntlama-Makhanya, Professor at the University of Fort Hare, South Africa; Jana Reschova, Associate Professor at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic; and Noelle Hunter, Clinical Assistant Professor at The University of Alabama in Huntsville, USA, provided their valuable perspectives and insights.
